The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Sergeant Charles H. Davis (ASN: 6251481), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. First Sergeant Davis voluntarily accompanied his company forward when a strong enemy counterattack was expected. When his company suffered numerous casualties as a result of an enemy mine field, First Sergeant Davis, at great personal risk, entered the mine field to clear a path for his company. Despite darkness and fierce enemy sniper fire, he successfully cleared a path and also eliminated the enemy snipers who were firing at him. He then crossed a canal, cleared mines from the area, and returning, led his company successfully across the canal without further casualties incurring. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Sergeant Davis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
