The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Cecil L. Davis (ASN: 36728124), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 743d Tank Battalion (Separate), attached to the 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 January 1945, in Belgium. During a bitter engagement with the enemy, Sergeant Davis noticed a wounded infantryman about fifty yards from his tank. The man lay in deep snow so badly wounded he was unable to move. Mortar, artillery, and small arms fire fell all around him. Despite these grave dangers, Sergeant Davis abandoned the security of his vehicle and raced through enemy fire to the wounded man’s side and then carried his two hundred yards to an infantry aid station. Sergeant Davis’ gallant actions saved the life of his wounded comrade. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Davis, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
