The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Ralph M. D’Ambrosio (ASN: 32528845), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 August 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant D’Ambrosio was serving as a squad leader whose squad was given the mission of defending a road block. A terrific enemy counterattack caused the position to become untenable, and a temporary withdrawal was necessary. Staff Sergeant D-Ambrosio coordinated and controlled the withdrawal in such a manner that a minimum of casualties resulted. He constantly exposed himself to enemy fire in order to encourage his men and direct their fire, and although painfully wounded, refused to evacuate himself to an aid station until he was so weak from loss of blood he was forced to do so. As soon as his wounds were dressed, he determined to return to the fight, desisting only after receiving direct orders from his superior officer not to do so. As a result of his initiative and indomitable fighting spirit, he so inspired his men that the enemy threat was repulsed. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant D’Ambrosio, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
