Captain Daykin voluntarily left friendly lines and crossed through an unmarked mine field to an exposed position in order to register the fire of his battalion. A few hours later, when the enemy launched a series of vigorous counterattacks, Captain Daykin delivered such effective fire on enemy assembly points and other hostile targets that the enemy efforts were thwarted. The courage and devotion to duty manifested by Captain Daykin reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.

Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 72 (October 7, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) Albert Daykin (ASN: 0-1176930), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 197th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 2 July 1944 to 26 September 1944, in France. During this considerable period of combat, Captain Daykin, as forward observer for a field artillery unit giving direct fire support to an infantry organization, has many times placed himself in hazardous positions so that he could direct effective fire on hostile troops and gun emplacements. He has been twice wounded, yet undaunted, he has remained at his post with the forward infantry elements. His aggressive determination and personal bravery, exhibited over this entire period of time have materially aided in the success of innumerable tactical operations. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Daykin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
