Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 129 (December 20, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert P. Cushman (ASN: 0-362863), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 22 September 1944, in Germany. When his unit found it absolutely necessary to the successful execution of its plans for an imminent attack across the Wurr River to know certain vital facts about the character of the river, First Lieutenant Cushman volunteered to take out a patrol and obtain the information. Advancing across the dangerous territory in front of his lines under cover of darkness, First Lieutenant Cushman and the tree men with him succeeded in infiltrating past the enemy outposts and reached the river. He waded into the river himself to ascertain its depth, and then continued on to investigate the character of enemy defenses on the opposite side. The information First Lieutenant Cushman and his patrol secured proved invaluable assistance in the successful execution of the subsequent attack made by his unit. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Cushman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
