Headquarters, 79th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 86 (November 1, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) John D. Cunningham (ASN: 0-465285), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 314th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 9 July 1944 in France. When tank support was required to reduce an enemy strongpoint which was impeding the advance of infantry south of La Surellerie, Lieutenant Cunningham volunteered to make his way, under intense enemy artillery and mortar fire, to the tank units and lead them forward to where they could be directed to the attack. He accomplished this hazardous undertaking without regard for his own safety and at great personal risk. The courage and devotion to duty resulted in the elimination of the enemy position and reflect highest credit on Lieutenant Cunningham and the Armed Forces of the United States.
