The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant [then Staff Sergeant] Edward J. Cullen (ASN: 32027149), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 114th Infantry Regiment, 44th Infantry Division, in action on 15 February 1945 in the vicinity of Woelfling, France. When his platoon leader and platoon sergeant were wounded during an assault on a strongly defended enemy position, Sergeant Cullen assumed command. Although exposed to fire from the front and from the flank, he quickly reorganized his men and led them forward in a continuation of the attack, and successfully took his objective. Sergeant Cullen’s inspirational leadership is in keeping with the Army’s finest traditions and he merits high praise.
