The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major (Infantry), [then Captain] R. Jerald Culhane (ASN: 0-25083), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 July 1944, in France. Major Culhane moved through murderous enemy fire which had killed or wounded the superior officers in his battalion, to reorganize his unit after it had become disorganized. He then gallantly led small groups forward to contact a leading company, thereby establishing the battalion as a fighting force again. Major Culhane’s gallant actions were an invaluable contribution to the attack and gained him the admiration of his associates. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Major Culhane, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
