The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Miles E. Crowe (ASN: 36152656), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. During an enemy counterattack, a squad, of which Staff Sergeant Crowe was the leader was being heavily pressed. In an endeavor to get a better view of enemy positions, Staff Sergeant Crowe exposed himself in an area in advance of his squad where he received serious wounds. When two of his comrades attempted to rescue him, he waved them back, shouting that he was all right, although he knew that he was too severely wounded to evacuate himself. Since his position was in full view of the enemy, Staff Sergeant Crowe realized that he would be endangering the lives of his fellow soldiers if he permitted them to attempt his rescue. Instead, he voluntarily remained for a considerable period of time in this dangerous and exposed position, although seriously wounded, in order not to endanger the lives of his fellow soldiers. Staff Sergeant Crowe’s gallantry and self-sacrificing loyalty to his comrades reflect the highest credit upon himself and were a source of inspiration to his comrades.
