The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Chauncey G. Cravens (ASN: 0-1291241), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 July 1944. On that date, the rifle company of which First Lieutenant Cravens was a platoon leader was in contact with the enemy and was receiving intense enemy fire. During an attempt to silence an enemy machine gun, one of First Lieutenant Cravens’ me was seriously wounded and lay helpless in an exposed position. When an aid man who had rushed to the assistance of the wounded soldier was killed, First Lieutenant Cravens immediately crawled forward in the face of heavy enemy small arms fire and evacuated the wounded soldier. This gallant act, performed at great risk to his life and despite the fact that the aid man had been instantly killed in an attempt to effect the evacuation of the wounded soldier, denotes outstanding loyalty. The fortitude and unselfish determination displayed by First Lieutenant Cravens in the performance of this act reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
