Headquarters, 25th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 442 (November 28, 1950)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) William L. Patton (ASN: 0-1340216), United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2d Battalion, 35th Infantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy in Korea. On 1 September 1950, Lieutenant Patton volunteered to lead a re-supply party to a unit which had been cut off by fanatic hostile attacks near Kuhe-ri, Korea. When his group was attacked by a vastly superior number of enemy, he expertly deployed the men and though exposed to devastating fire, directed their actions by shouts and hand signals. Then crawling among the positions, he encouraged the men to continue the advance. Although severely wounded, he led the group forward through the hostile ranks to the friendly unit, consenting to evacuation only after he was assured that the mission was successful. Lieutenant Patton’s gallant leadership, soldierly determination and military ability are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
