The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Andrew Crapo (ASN: 31120742), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company C, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 16 February 1944, in Italy. Private First Class Crapo was a company runner, and armed himself with hand grenades and ran 50 yards across bare, open terrain to within throwing distance of two enemy machine guns which had cut off elements of his company. Private First Class Crapo’s action was instrumental in forcing the enemy to abandon is position, thus allowing the Infantry to continue its attack. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Crapo, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
