The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Field Artillery) John A. Crago (ASN: 0-398007), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy during the period from 4 October 1944 to 8 October 1944, in Germany. Captain Crago, a liaison officer, distinguished himself during the battle to encircle the city of Aachen. During the four day period, he invariably selected observation posts at the most advanced points possible even though by so doing he exposed himself to heavy fire from enemy artillery, tanks, and infantry. Captain Crago’s outstanding courage and devotion to duty under the most hazardous conditions enable his unit to deliver accurate artillery fire against the enemy at a most crucial time. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Crago, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
