The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Private First Class] Robert F. Crabbs, Sr. (ASN: 33941153), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy on 23 December 1944, in the vicinity of ****, ****. When an enemy sniper forced Staff Sergeant Crabbs’ squad to temporarily shelter, Staff Sergeant Crabbs ran across sixty yards of fire-swept ground to the rear of the building occupied by the sniper. Inside, Staff Sergeant Crabbs was fired on from the basement. He promptly returned the fire with his rifle, killing the enemy in the basement. Hearing more of the enemy on the second floor Staff Sergeant Crabbs hurled several hand grenades upstairs, killing one German and wounding two. Staff Sergeant Crabbs’ initiative and daring in single-handedly eliminating four of the enemy reflect great credit on himself and exemplify the highest traditions of the military service.
