The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Chaplain’s Corps) Charles Philip Cowherd (ASN: 0-315593), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving as a chaplain with the 315th Infantry Regiment, 79th Infantry Division, in operations in France, on 14 January 1945. In response to an emergency call for litter bearers, Chaplain Cowherd, with complete disregard for his own safety, led a three man litter team forward through intense enemy mortar fire to the wounded men. He then personally assisted in the carrying of the litters, and as a result the wounded were quickly evacuated. The courage and devotion to duty displayed by Chaplain Cowherd reflect high credit on himself and the armed forces of the Unites States.
