The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Curvin M. Covington (ASN: 34704182), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 12 August 1944, in France. An enemy anti-tank mine exploded and knocked out a friendly anti-tank gun and killed or wounded the entire squad. Private First Class Covington and a comrade observing the wounded man lying exposed to enemy fire, advanced through the intense fire to assist the wounded men, carrying two of them to safety. Private First Class Covington returned three times under the intense fire and carried the wounded men three hundred yards to safety. His gallant actions saved the lives of his wounded comrades. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Covington, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
