The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Infantry) Robert E. Counseller (ASN: 0-1057711), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 3 April 1945, in Germany. Second Lieutenant Counseller crawled through intense enemy fire for forty yards in front of friendly lines until he reached a vantage point from which he could observe enemy positions and direct effective mortar fire on them. By his hazardous action he aided in driving the enemy from their positions and in gaining valuable information for an attack the following day. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Second Lieutenant Counseller, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
