The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technical Sergeant Francis M. Cordle (ASN: 37015365), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 4 October 1944, in Holland. Technical Sergeant Cordle was leading his platoon in an attack upon two enemy pillboxes which were part of the Siegfried Line. It was necessary to make the attack over two hundred yards of open ground and up a steep wooded slope, all of which was covered by fierce fire from the enemy pillboxes and by enemy mortar and artillery fire. Twice Technical Sergeant Cordle led the assault and each time the platoon was driven back by the numerically superior enemy forces who were within the fortifications. Undaunted, Sergeant Cordle went from man to man in his platoon, exhorting and encouraging them so that on the third attempt his comrades followed him with determination, and the pillboxes were captured. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technical Sergeant Cordle, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
