The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Stanley W. Cooper (ASN: 0-1291422), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 August 1944, in France. First Lieutenant Cooper was assigned to duty with an infantry organization engaged in a general advance against the enemy. When the attack was held up by hostile machine gun fire from a knocked out tank, First Lieutenant Cooper, with complete disregard for his personal safety, crawled alone to a position within twenty yards of the enemy strongpoint, waited for the hostile gunners to exposed themselves, and killed them with his automatic rifle. Such a daring display of personal gallantry by their leader so inspired his men that they surged forward and overwhelmed the enemy. The initiative, personal bravery, and determined devotion to duty displayed by First Lieutenant Cooper reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
