The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Lauren George Cook (ASN: 39317523), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 88th Infantry Division in Italy on 24 April 1945. Sergeant Cook was one of a party that took a machine gun nest in Italy. Then, when two of the enemy came forward and one lifted his gun to shoot, Sergeant Cook shot the other and despite fatal wounds, captured the two enemy soldiers. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
