The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Sergeant John Griffin Fowle (ASN: 180803), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Sanitary Detachment, 126th Infantry Regiment (Attached), 32d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Juvigny, France, 31 August 1918. Under harassing machine-gun fire, and in plain view of the enemy, Sergeant Fowle voluntarily went forward a distance of 150 yards to dress the wounds of an officer. He returned for assistance after which he removed the officer to a place of safety.
