The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Mechanic Benjamin E. Foust (ASN: 1456831), United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with Company F, 139th Infantry Regiment, 35th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near Exermont, France, 29 September 1918. After having one eye shot out, Mechanic Foust refused to avail himself of the opportunity to be evacuated to the rear, but rendered first aid to himself and continued to dress the wounds of his comrades, until a heavy concentration of gas so affected his wounded eye that he was forced to go to the rear. His work was the means of saving the lives of many of his comrades.
