The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant George D. Conley (ASN: 35778895), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 23 February 1945, in Germany. When enemy machine gun fire pinned his platoon down, Staff Sergeant Conley rose in the face of it and went to a wounded automatic rifleman, took his gun, and moved to an exposed position to bring fire on the enemy position. Although the enemy switched their fire on him and wounded him, Staff Sergeant Conley gallantly continued firing until the enemy position was neutralized, thereby preventing his platoon from suffering heavy casualties and allowing it to advance. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Conley, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
