The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles S. Colwell (ASN: 35900997), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 30th Reconnaissance Troop (Mechanized), 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 7 April 1945, in Germany. When his platoon encountered the enemy, they immediately became engaged in a fierce fire fight during which the platoon was flanked on three sides. The enemy established a roadblock behind the column and in order to withdraw, volunteers were called for to try and evacuate the vehicles by a breakthrough of the roadblock. Private First Class Colwell volunteered to drive the lead vehicle in the assault, but his vehicle was knocked out by enemy bazooka fire and he was seriously wounded. The bravery and determination displayed by Private First Class Colwell reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
