The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Carlos A. Coleman (ASN: 39538033), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 120th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 15 October 1944, in Germany. During an attack by friendly forces on an enemy-held town, Sergeant Coleman, assigned as a Squad Leader of a heavy machine gun section, with great initiative assumed command of the section when the section sergeant became a casualty. Although the men were almost completely disorganized as a result of the bitter battle they had just completed, Sergeant Coleman efficiently reorganized the section and placed his guns in strategic positions. Throughout the operation, enemy artillery was falling in the area, but Sergeant Coleman went among his men and encouraged them to hold their positions. The high degree of leadership and courage displayed by Sergeant Coleman were an inspiration to the men of his organization. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Coleman, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
