The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry), [then Second Lieutenant] William L. Cokeley (ASN: 0-534286), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 November 1944, in Germany. First Lieutenant Cokeley led a volunteer patrol on a hazardous mission deep into enemy territory with the mission of capturing prisoners for intelligence purposes. The patrol was discovered by the enemy and a vigorous hand-to-hand fight ensued. Two prisoners were captured and the patrol began to withdraw. The enemy lines had been thoroughly aroused and heavy fire was placed in the patrol’s line of withdrawal. Utilizing skillful patrolling methods, First Lieutenant Cokeley brought the patrol back to friendly lines without suffering a casualty. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by First Lieutenant Cokeley, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
