The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Jesse L. Cobb (ASN: 44012835), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 43d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of San Jose, Luzon, Philippine Islands, on 7 May 1945. When the patrol of which Private Cobb was a member was ambushed by the Japanese, it was forced to withdraw quickly under heavy enemy mortar and machine-gun fire. As a result of this action, Private Cobb and a companion became separated from the remainder of the patrol in the ensuing confusion. Learning that his comrade was unable to move as he had sustained a gunshot wound which fractured his leg, Private Cobb, although himself wounded in the arm by shell fragments, elected to stay with his fellow soldier rather than rejoin the patrol. He remained with his stricken companion all night in hostile territory, administering first aid and constantly moving him to places of concealment from active enemy patrols. The following morning he was able to reach the safety of his line. The indomitable courage and altruistic action displayed by Private Cobb were undoubtedly responsible for saving the life of his comrade. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
