Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 217 (November 16, 1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Corps of Engineers) Hobart R. Clutts (ASN: 0-1050213), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 105th Engineer Combat Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy from 3 March 1945 to 4 March 1945, in Germany. First Lieutenant Clutts and his platoon were given the mission of constructing a pontoon bridge over the Kyll River. Working under extremely heavy enemy artillery, mortar, and machine gun fire, he directed the construction of the bridge which was completed in a minimum of time. Several times during the construction the pontoons were destroyed by enemy fire, but First Lieutenant Clutts rallied his men and succeeded in effecting the repairs. First Lieutenant Clutts’ gallantry and heroism aided greatly in the success of ensuing operations. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
