The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fourth Grade Alfred G. Closmore (ASN: 37176271), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Cannon Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in the vicinity of *****, Sicily on July 1943. During an attack against the enemy, the Cannon Company, 15th Infantry Regiment, was delayed from advancing by heavy enemy 149-mm. artillery fire. The radio of a quarter-ton truck operated by Technician Fourth Grade Closmore was located in the center of this artillery impact area. Without thought to his personal safety, he voluntarily remained with his vehicle under this heavy artillery fire delivered from a distance of approximately 2,500 yards, for one hour and twenty minutes, maintaining communication with the 3d platoon, Cannon Company, which enabled the platoon to effectively bring fire upon the enemy battery, even though five quarter-ton vehicles were destroyed in the near vicinity of his vehicle. Technician Fourth Grade Closmore’s devotion to duty resulted in the destruction of the enemy artillery battery and reflects great credit upon himself and upholds the highest traditions of the Military Service of the United States.
