The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private William T. Cline (ASN: 35296875), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 24 March 1945, in Germany. Private Cline was leading his squad across open ground to their objective when it was subjected to time fire from two enemy self-propelled guns. The shells burst so close that the men hit the ground and froze. Realizing that numerous casualties would be suffered if the advance did not continue, Private Cline fearlessly exposed himself to the deadly fire and moved from man to man, shouting encouragement. His courageous example inspired the men to resume the advance and proceed to the objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private Cline, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
