Headquarters, 3d Armored Division, General Orders No. 20 (1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant (Armor) James N. Cleveland, Jr. (ASN: 0-1283025), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 3d Armored Division, in action in France from 11 July 1944 to 16 July 1944. Lieutenant Cleveland, on numerous occasions exhibited great courage and caring when he outposted ground recently taken by friendly troops. He also, without regard for his own personal safety, traversed the entire perimeter of the outer defense of our position and reported the exact locations of all friendly troops to the officer in command. His action, performed in the face of heavy enemy fire and sporadic small arms fire, reflects great credit upon him and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
