Headquarters, 5th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 58 (1945)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant (Field Artillery) Eugene Clegg (ASN: 0-1185099), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 50th Field Artillery Battalion, 5th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 October 1944, near Metz, France. While our force occupied the fortification of Fort Driant, numerous enemy counterattacks and artillery barrages were being inflicted in an effort to dislodge our positions. On one occasion, the enemy could be heard and partially seen, preparing for a night counterattack. Oblivious to the precarious situation, Lieutenant Clegg, a Forward Observer, with utter disregard for personal safety, moved to an exposed position to direct artillery fire on the enemy concentrations. Remaining at his post until daybreak, Lieutenant Clegg directed such accurate and devastating fire that the enemy attempt was completely frustrated. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
