(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Chaplain Edward Jefferson Clary, United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving as a chaplain with the 79th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Normandy, France, on 15 July 1944. During a heavy engagement it was reported that there were casualties who could not be evacuated due to the intensity of enemy fire. Chaplain Clary drove his quartermaster truck along an exposed yard in front of the most forward friendly positions for a distance of 400 yards, collected the wounded men, and returned with them to the aid station. He was killed when the Battalion Aid Statin was shelled. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Chaplain Clary, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
