The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert C. Clark (ASN: 39907131), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 823d Tank Destroyer Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 August 1944, in France. Private Clark was serving as a driver with a tank destroyer organization engaged in supporting an infantry unit bitterly attempting to repulse a vigorous enemy counterattack. The ferocity of the enemy thrust had forced many troops to withdraw, but Private Clark and his companions remained with their vehicle to deliver effective fire with their machine gun. The enemy attacked with hand grenades and machine gun fire, followed by smoke bombs, but Private Clarke and his companions remained at their post. When their gun jammed, Private Clark and one other comrade opened fire with their carbine, to cove the withdrawal of the remainder of the crew. They then jumped into another vehicle which was set afire, yet completely disregarding their danger, drove the burning vehicle through two separate groups of the enemy, killing some and forcing the other to scatter. The daring, and great fighting courage displayed by Private Clark reflect great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Armed Forces.
