The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private James L. Clark (ASN: 35663089), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the Medical Detachment, 118th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, on 28 July 1944, in France. Private Clark was assigned to duty as medical technician serving with a field artillery unit engaged in combat. The unit to which he was assigned to duty suffered a heavy attack by a hostile bombing formation, which caused innumerable casualties. With complete disregard for his personal safety, Private Clark moved from place to place over the area, constantly endangered by the hostile bombs, in order to render effective first aid to the wounded, and evacuate them to the safety of an aid station. By his heroic action, Private Clark saved many lives. The personal courage, determined devotion to duty and supreme fortitude exhibited by Private Clark reflect great credit on himself and are in keeping with the highest traditions of the Armed Forces.
