The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Staff Sergeant Robert W. Chapin (ASN: 35281433), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 29 July 1944, in France. Staff Sergeant Chapin was assigned to duty as a squad leader serving with an infantry unit engaged in a bitter attack against strong enemy forces. Ordered to take his squad in an attempt to flank an enemy position, Staff Sergeant Chapin continued to direct his squad in the successful accomplishment of the assigned mission until he died. The heroic fortitude and personal courage exhibited by this outstanding soldier merit the highest praise. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Chapin, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
