The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Robert F. Chance (ASN: 65835555), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company A, 1st Battalion, 7th Infantry Regiment, 3d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy in Germany. On 18 April 1945, Sergeant Chance led three men in an attack against a hostile machine gun and a sniper whose fire had temporarily halted the advancer of his company in Nuremberg, Germany. As he ran to a ditch approximately 65 yards from the enemy position, one of his men behind him was wounded by the enemy machine gun. While the sniper fired at him, Sergeant Chance abandoned his cover and dragged the casualty to safety. He next dashed to a concrete wall ten yards from the hospital occupied by the Germans, and then assaulted the position with Tommy Gun fire. After killing the machine gunner who was posted at a window, Sergeant Chance ran into the hospital and surprised the sniper, whom he shot dead. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Sergeant Chance, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
