Headquarters, 83d Infantry Division, General Orders No. 37 (September 9, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Frank W. Chambers (ASN: 1283212), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the *** Infantry Regiment, 83d Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 6 August 1944, near *****, France. During a battalion attack, when an enemy self-propelled high velocity weapon fired point blank on his company, causing many casualties, Lieutenant Chambers quickly reorganized the unit and personally attacked the enemy gun with a rocket launcher. His aggressive action not only forced the enemy to withdraw but so inspired the command to increase the vigor of its attack against the fortress of ****** that it was soon captured. The conspicuous and valiant initiative and devotion to duty of this officer reflects great credit upon himself and the finest traditions of the military service.
