The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry), [then First Lieutenant] Russell A. Chabaud (ASN: 0-1300934), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 13 July 1944, in France. Captain Chabaud was serving as a Company Commander with an Infantry Regiment which was vigorously attacking enemy positions. The resistance was so great that considerable casualties were inflicted in our ranks, including all of the officers in his company. Although Captain Chabaud had been painfully wounded, he refused to leave his company, for the casualties inflicted threatened to create disorganization among the ranks. With complete unselfishness, Captain Chabaud crawled to the forward elements of his company, encouraging and exhorting his men in such a courageous manner that the attack was vigorously continued and the objective successfully captured. The outstanding leadership and bravery demonstrated by Captain Chabaud on this occasion were a profound inspiration to his men. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Captain Chabaud, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
