Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 128 (December 19, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Edward William Cavill (ASN: 42027615), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy 7 October 1944, in Germany. Private First Class Cavill’s platoon had taken a pillbox and was defending it against an enemy counterattack. During the counterattack, when four members of the platoon were wounded some distance from the pillbox, Private First Class Cavill unhesitatingly exposed himself to carry them to its shelter. Although the remainder of the platoon was forced to withdraw, Private First Class Cavill ignored the Germans who reoccupied the pillbox and continued to administer first aid to his wounded comrades. Shortly afterwards the Germans were forced to retreat by a new assault. They ordered Private First Class Cavill to leave with them, but at the risk of being shot for disobedience, he refused with the wounded men. This display of heroism and determination by Private First Class Cavill was an inspiration to his entire organization. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Cavill, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
