Headquarters, 30th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 129 (December 20, 1944)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant John P. Cataline (ASN: 39042371), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 117th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 2 October 1944, in Germany. When the leading company of the battalion was pinned down by heavy enemy fire during an attack, Staff Sergeant Cataline led his mortar section to advanced positions. Then, at great risk to his life, he ran to a high point which placed him in full view of the enemy and from this position effectively directed mortar fire against the enemy. This gallant act allowed the battalion to push forward to secure its objective. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Staff Sergeant Cataline, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
