The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Dominic Castro, United States Army, for gallantry in action as a member of the 21st Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division, in action at Breakneck Ridge, Leyte, Philippine Islands, on 6 November 1944. Sergeant Castro was a squad leader in an infantry rifle company. The enemy made a bayonet charge on his position. Sergeant Castro was hit by a grenade and also bayoneted. He stayed in his position without medical attention until he was properly relieved. By his remaining in position, enemy infiltration was not possible. Sergeant Castro displayed true devotion to duty and was an inspiration to all who witnessed his actions.
