The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Ines G. Castillo (ASN: 39687962), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 91st Infantry Division on the FIFTH Army Front in Italy during World War II. During an attack up a small ridge, Corporal Castillo’s company was caught in deadly machine gun fire and suffered casualties. Corporal Castillo, a Medical Aidman, made his way in the face of hostile fire to the wounded men and administered first aid. Although the enemy directed fire on him, he calmly administered aid and reassured and comforted the wounded. When he came to the last man he found he had run out of bandages. Without hesitation he used the bandage from his own first aid packet. Throughout the engagement Corporal Castillo acted with great humanity and courage. His gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
