The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Walter L. Cassidy (ASN: 11120349), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 3d Battalion, 347th Infantry Regiment, 87th Infantry Division, in action against an armed enemy near Bonnerue, Belgium, 6 January 1945. Private Cassidy, while under heavy machine gun and artillery fire, helped knock out a German Tiger Tank. In accomplishing this feat, Private Cassidy and other members of his bazooka team had to dodge from building to building firing their rockets when the opportunity presented itself. After knocking out the Tiger Tank, they went after a light tank which had been firing at them. Their aggressive action forced the enemy tank to withdraw.
