The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Technician Fifth Grade Frank C. Carvalho (ASN: 31232677), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 230th Field Artillery Battalion, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 11 October 1944, in Germany. Technician Fifth Grade Carvalho was a member of an artillery forward observer party directing artillery support for a Battalion of Infantry attacking the enemy. Our attacking forces were pinned down by intense hostile fire and the enemy launched a counterattack, spearheaded with tanks, which was aimed at isolating the battalion. At great risk to his life, Technician Fifth Grade Carvalho remained throughout the attack in a vulnerable forward position subjected to increasingly heavy enemy small arms and artillery fire, and directed effective artillery fire on the counterattacking enemy so that the hostile thrust was repulsed with heavy losses. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Technician Fifth Grade Carvalho, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
