(Citation Needed) – SYNOPSIS: Captain (Infantry) Kenneth E. Carter, United States Army, was awarded the Silver Star for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against the enemy while serving as Commanding Officer, Company C, 279th Infantry Regiment, 95th Infantry Division during World War II. During the drive on Metz, after losing some of his enlisted men in an assault across a draw covered by intense mortar, machine gun and artillery fire, Captain Carter gathered the survivors of his command, conducted a reorganization and led them in a second attack. German forces in the draw delivered a terrific fire on them but Captain Carter’s men, under his inspired leadership, wiped out the enemy in terrible fighting and carried the objective.
