The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Rider W. Carr (ASN: 39689332), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with Company E, 133d Infantry Regiment, 34th Infantry Division, in action on 27 April 1945, in Italy. When a force of about five hundred enemy attacked his company’s position, Private First Class Carr left his machine gun to other members of his section and, taking an automatic rifle, took up a post in an exposed position about thirty-five yards away. From this position Private First Class Carr was able to fire upon a group of about forty enemy attempting to flank the company. His effective fire broke up the enemy attack but brought a fierce concentration of fire in return. Disregarding the small arms and bazooka fire which fell all around his position, Private First Class Carr remained at his post, preventing the enemy from attaining their objective and inflicting seven casualties upon them. The courage and devotion to duty displayed by Private First Class Carr reflect highly upon himself and the Armed Forces of the United States.
