The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Walter Fiechter, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 109th Infantry Regiment, 28th Division, American Expeditionary Forces, near St. Agnan, France, 16 July 1918. Although painfully wounded at the start of an attack, First Lieutenant Fiechter refused to be evacuated, but continued to lead his platoon forward until ordered to withdraw. His courage was an inspiration to his command.
