The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Nicholas Caroccia (ASN: 4210686), United States Army, for gallantry in action while serving with the 119th Infantry Regiment, 30th Infantry Division, in action against the enemy on 17 October 1944, in Germany. During an engagement with the enemy, Private First Class Caroccia’s company was held up by direct fire from an enemy Mark VI tank. Private First Class Caroccia voluntarily armed himself with a bazooka and crawled toward the tank alone. By using a hedgerow for partial concealment he reached a point seventy-five yards from the tank from which he fired two rounds, both of which hit the tank. Although not disabled, the tank was forced to withdraw, enabling our troops to continue the attack. Private First Class Caroccia’s courage in the face of great danger was an inspiration to the men with whom he served. The gallant actions and dedicated devotion to duty demonstrated by Private First Class Caroccia, without regard for his own life, were in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army.
