The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Eugene W. Cario (ASN: 33709375), United States Army, for gallantry in action against the enemy while serving with the 84th Infantry Division in *****, on 14 January 1945. When the advance of his company was temporarily halted by heavy machine gun fire from enemy tanks, Private Cario, disregarding his safety, after directing his unit’s machine guns and mortars to positions which he had selected, placed rocket launcher fire on the hostile vehicles which resulted in their withdrawal. In the performance of this brave act, Private Cario received wounds from which he subsequently died. The tenacious fighting spirit, conspicuous courage and unswerving devotion to duty displayed by Private Cario reflect high credit upon himself and are in accordance with the finest traditions of the military service.
